From the Principal

Dear Families,

As I write we are hosting our dads and special friends for a Father’s Day/Footy Colours celebration. It is wonderful to see so many visitors at our school! We wish all the special men in our lives a very happy Father’s Day on Sunday.

I would also like to let you know that Shannon Smith is taking some well-deserved long service leave for the last three weeks of this term to travel overseas with her family. We wish her all the best and look forward to her safe return. Helen, Tania and I will attempt to fill her shoes!

Have a lovely weekend, shared with those you love,

 Terrielynn

School Wide Positive Behaviours

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support is:  A multi-tiered framework for establishing the social culture and behavioural supports needed for a school to achieve behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

For the next two weeks at St Mary’s we are working with our students on the following:

RESPECT -  ensure the way you speak is appropriate

SAFETY - look out for others on the yard

RESPONSIBILITY - follow the school values and expectations

Sports Catch Up

Grade 3-4 and Grade 5-6 Hooptime

Hooptime has finally come around! Next week, our Grade 3-4 students will be playing on Tuesday, while our Grade 5-6 students will be on Friday. A huge thank you to families and Monivae College students who are assisting with the scoring on the day.

I sent this message on Seesaw to all families in Grades 3-6 on Thursday, but these are the reminders for Hooptime next week.

  1. If you intend on taking your child directly to HILAC on Tuesday (Grade 3-4) or Friday (Grade 5-6), I need to know please! Either sending me a Seesaw message, or returning the slip on the note that went home a few weeks ago will be fine. As the first games start at 9:30, we can't be waiting around school for students!
  2. Your child will need shorts without pockets on the day. I am happy with a dark colour of some kind (navy blue, black etc). Please note that this is a rule that is enforced by the referees and your child will not be able to play unless this is followed.
  3. I will give your child a St. Mary's top to wear the day before, so they can wear it to HILAC on the day. Both myself and our coaches will be collecting all the tops at the end of the event, so please ensure that your child has their sports top to wear as well. This is particularly important for the Grade 3-4 families, as I will need to wash the tops before the Grade 5-6's use them on Friday.
  4. If you would like to take your student home directly after the event, you will need to speak to your child's coach directly, before taking them home. This is in line with our child safety standards. We cannot let students leave on their own, so we need to see you. Thank you.

We are looking forward to these days next week!

Division Table Tennis

Thank you to those students and families who have expressed interest in this event. I am currently working through organising this day, and will send you home more information shortly.

Saturday Morning Netball - Term 4

It has been tricky, but we finally have good news on the Saturday Morning Netball front! We are fielding 3 teams in the Grade 3-4 competition and 2 teams in the Grade 5-6 competition.

I would like to thank those families who have put their hand up to coach or umpire our teams for the upcoming season. With your support, we have been able to field teams of about 8-9 students, which maximises the court time for all, rather than larger teams of 12-13.

I understand it is a huge effort to commit to these roles, but it also benefits our students for their love and development of the game.

I have sent home a note today with the teams, coaches and umpires for you to look at. Your child has also brought a note home about ‘Media Consent’ and a ‘Medical Consent’ form. These need to be returned to school before your child takes the court. Thank you.

Grade 5-6 Swimming Program - Term 4

The Grade 5-6 Swimming Program will be held in the first week of Term 4 (Monday 7th October - Friday 11th October). Your child has received a  note outlining everything that you need to know about the program. You will have also received a blue note. The blue note needs to be filled out completely, as this is classified as a high risk activity. Please ensure that they are returned by Friday 13th September. Thank you.

Library News

Last week was Children's Book Week.  In Library across the school, we have been working with the books that were shortlisted for Picture Book of the Year.  We even had our own voting station set up, where the students were invited to vote for their favourite Picture Book. And....the results are in!  The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) winner was 'Timeless' by Kelly Canby and the St Mary's winner, by an overwhelming margin, was 'Every Night at Midnight' by Peter Cheong.  Both are beautiful books with some wonderful messages behind them.  Well worth a read!

 Child Safety

Last week, I mentioned a site called 'Common Sense Media'.  This site is a great resource if you are wanting to find out more about books, movies, video games, apps and even YouTube channels.  You can browse thousands of age-based reviews, or search by category to check if the media your child wants to access is age approriate.  It's another great tool in our parenting toolkit! You can explore this site via the link below.
